Project dldl/ድልድል aims to bridge the disciplines and sectors of religious studies, gender & development and public health to respond to domestic violence in religious communities in a more integrated manner. We are especially interested in understanding how religio-cultural parameters influence the experience of domestic violence and how theology and the clergy in particular can become resourceful in efforts to respond to the problem more systematically.
In this effort, we have set up a new podcast series that seeks to engage the Ethiopian public and relevant stakeholders in conversations and awareness-raising around domestic violence in the country. We seek to achieve learning among ourselves and the society at large by hosting knowledgeable and experienced speakers to explore together the issue of domestic violence in Ethiopia and to share resources and directions to overcome norms and attitudes that contribute to maintain a tolerance of the problem or victims’ silence around it. For the purposes of accessibility, we alternate between English and Amharic in each episode.
The podcast series was conceptualised by Dr Romina Istratii, who is a decolonial researcher and practitioner with ten year’s related experience in Ethiopia and sub-Saharan Africa. The series is led and hosted by Ms Etsegenet Hailemekeal, who is supporting the project with outreach and communications and has over five years’ experience in church ministry and two-year experience in human resource and office administration.
The podcast series episodes will be uploaded on the Soundcloud account of project dldl/ድልድል as they are being produced. We will also aim to disseminate the series to the Ethiopian public by engaging radio, TV and other channels of communication in the country.
We invite you to join us on this journey as we share new episodes in the following weeks containing powerful messages and resources from our project partners, feminist, religious and research organisations we work with and other members of Ethiopian society.
Episode 1 will seek to explore the issue of domestic violence in Ethiopia and how best to respond with Mr Wendmneh Lemma, who is Project Coordinator at the Ethiopian Women Lawyers’ Association (EWLA). EWLA is a well-established legal aid service that assists women, particularly disadvantaged women, who are victims of gender-based violence. EWLA is also a dedicated collaborator and supporter of project dldl/ድልድል in Ethiopia.
